Astonishing

Who is he?
Who is he with his marry me?
With his ring and his marry me,
the nerve, the gull.

This is not,
Not what was meant to be.
How could he ruin it all
With those two words?

I thought I knew him
Thought that he knew me
When did it change?
What did I miss?

A kiss,
When I thought all along,
That we were meant to find frontiers,
How could I be so wrong?

And I need,
How I need my sisters here
If I can't share my dreams
What were they for?

I thought our promise
That we would never change and never part.
I thought together,
We'd amaze the world.
How can I live my dreams or even start when everything has come apart.

I thought home was all I'd ever want
My attic all I'd ever need.
Now nothing feels the way it was before
And I don't know how to proceed.
I only know I'm meant for something more
I've got to know if I can be
Astonishing

There's a life
That I am meant to lead
A life like nothing I have known
I can feel it
And it's far from here
I've got to find it on my own

Even now I feel it's heat upon my skin.
A life of passion that pulls me from within,
A life that I am making to begin.
There must be somewhere I can be
Astonishing
Astonishing

I'll find my way
I'll find it far away
I'll find it in unexpected and unknown
I'll find my life in my own way
Today

Here I go
And there's no turning back
My great adventure has begun
I may be small
But I've got giant plans
To shine as greatly as the sun

I will blaze until I find my time and place
I will be fearless,
Surrendering modesty and grace
I will not disapear without a trace
I'll shout and start a riot
Be anything but quiet
Christopher Columbus
I'll be Astonishing
Astonishing

What we ought

"Of all the records in my fast growing collection, it was the one to which I kept returning. Tonight, however, I figured out why. In the opera, Donna Elvira is swearing revenge against Giovanni - because he's robbed her of her virtue. In truth, however, Elvira's anguish is rooted in the fact that she fell head over heals for the Don who has seduced and abandoned her. Meanwhile, Donna Anna is doing her damnest to avoid the dull, cautious Don Ottavio who so desperately wants her as his wife.
For some curious reason, this story rang a bell with me.
I had surrendered to Don Giovanni. I had surrendered to Don Ottavio. But why surrender again to anyone when you're finding your own way in the world?"

(The pursuit of happiness, Douglas Kennedy)

We do not what we ought;
What we ought not, we do;
And lean upon the thought
That chance will see us through

(Matthew Arnold)

"When written in chinese the word "crisis" is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity"

(John F. Kennedy)

I have surrendered only to a few men in my life and between them they are so strikingly different from one another that I wonder if there's any pattern at all. Line them up and you'll be left arching your brows and scratching your head.

Then there's the line up of men to whom I've never been able to surrender even though they'd been perfectly happy to surrender to me.
I've tried - and managed quite well - to get by on my own but if I actually have succeeded in 'finding my way in the world' is another story altogether. I still like to think that I haven't found my way yet, but if I really want to convince myself of the fact that I'm still finding myself and my way, I should at least be trying to do so in the mean time.

And that is precisely been the sour point during the last couple of years. I'm not sure if I am living my life or if my life is living me instead, and, believe me, I'm not saying there's something totally wrong with the quality of my life. What I'm talking about is the amount of thinking as compared to the amount of actual acting: The putting into practice of all these thoughts. I keep saying to myself that "there's still something special out there waiting for me", and don't think that by saying this I don't realize that some day I'll have to grab the bull by its horns instead of staring out of my window or doing my daily chores with that haughty look on my face. Action is the imparative word here and I know it. And what's holding me back?

Fear and laziness.

Still.

So tomorrow I'll drag my butt to that creative writing course information day with an open mind, and that will be part I of my action list towards the finding-my-way-in-this-world plan. Because isn't that the major objective in life? Didn't I always flee from mediocrity, nothingness and didn't I always break out when I felt imprisoned? All my fleeing and breaking out has to lead to something eventually, has to have some real purpose, indeed. Only then I will be able to trace a line through my life, a line with actions and logical consequences.

I'll keep you up to date!

Thinking and Writing

"In order for me to think about something, I have to first put it in writing. It's been that way since I was little. When I didn't understand something, I gathered up the words scattered at my feet, and lined them up into sentences. If that didn't help, I'd scatter them again, rearrange them in a different order. Repeat that a number of times, and I was able to think about things like most people. Writing for me was never difficult. Other children gathered pretty stones or acorns, and I wrote. As naturally as breathing, I'd scribble down one sentence after another. And I'd think. "

Sputnik Sweetheart, Haruki Murakami

Nothing to write

Seemingly transparant is this page
There's no ink. There are just black letters and words
No pen that scratches just the tick tick tock of my two three fingers on the keyboard
No real romance left in this world no letters no notes no thumps on the doormat
Deaf but screaming crowds notice me but do not speak
Their faces staring just for one moment. So light...
but heavy on my soul
No one moves out of place
There's so much laughter so much talk
So much to do so much to say
but nothing to write

Het is me zelf vaak overkomen.

A lovestruck romeo sings a streetsus serenade
Laying everybody low with me a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it ?

Juliet says hey its romeo you nearly gimme a heart attack
He's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriends' back
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it ?

Juliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget the movie song
When you wanna realise it was just that the time was wrong juliet ?

Come up on differents streets they both were streets of shame
Both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals ?
Where you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything you promised me think and thin
Now you just says oh romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with him

Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above Ill love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong juliet ?

I can't do the talk like they talk on tv
And I can't do a love song like the way its meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All do is keep the beat and bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie Id do the stars with you any time
Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong juliet ?

A lovestruck romeo sings a streetsus serenade
Laying everybody low with me a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it ?

Rice pudding again?

"Along the way I stopped into a coffee shop. All around me normal, everyday city types were going about their normal, everyday affairs. Lovers were whispering to each other, businessmen were poring over spread sheets, college kids were planning their next ski trip and discussing the new Police album. We could have been in any city in Japan. Transplant this coffee shop scene to Yokohama or Fukuoka and nothing would seem out of place. In spite of which - or, rather, all the more because - here I was, sitting in this coffee shop, drinking my coffee, feeling a desperate loneliness. I alone was the outsider. I had no place here."

Haruki Murakami, Dance Dance Dance

Reading Murakami is like being at home while listening to jazz and cooking something exquisite just for you, in your small but perfect kitchen. You think you feel at ease in your world, you think it's just right the way it is, when all of the sudden a monster taps on your window. It's a monster, you know it is. It looks terribly scary but at the same time you feel sorry for it and want to discover what it wants from you. So you open the window and ask the monster what he wants. And then...a journey not unlike Alice in Wonderland starts imposing itself on you.

It's amazing.

Anyway, it seems to me that the way most people go on living (I suppose there are a few exceptions), they think that the world of life (or whatever) is this place where everything is (or is supposed to be) basically logical and consistent. ... It's like when you put instant rice pudding mix in a bowl in the microwave and push the button, and you take the cover off when it rings, and there you've got rice pudding. I mean, what happens in between the time when you push the switch and when the microwave rings? You can't tell what's going on under the cover. Maybe the instant rice pudding first turns into macaroni cheese in the darkness when nobody's looking and only then turns back into rice pudding. We think it's natural to get rice pudding after we put rice pudding mix in the microwave and the bell rings, but to me that's just a presumption. I would be kind of relieved if, every once in a while, after you put rice pudding mix in the microwave and it rang and you opened the top, you got macaroni cheese. ...

Wanneer is haar leven voorgoed veranderd?

On(t)roerend Goed!

Onderhuur

Aiaiaiai, de moeilijke man!

Life

There is no mystery to happiness.
Unhappy men are all alike. Some wound they suffered long ago, some wish denied, some blow to pride, some kindling spark of love put out by scorn - or worse, indifference - cleaves to them, or they to it, and so they live each day within a shroud of yesterdays.
The happy man does not look back. He doesn't look ahead. He lives in the present.

But there's the rub. The present can never deliver one thing: meaning. The ways of happiness and meaning are not the same. To find happiness, a man need only live in the moment; he need only live for the moment. But if he wants meaning - the meaning of his dreams, his secrets, his life - a man must reinhabit his past, however dark, and live for the future, however uncertain. Thus nature dangles happiness and meaning before us all, insisting only that we choose between them.

The interpretation of a murder, Jed Rubenfeld

We are the sum of all the people that we ever met.
You change the tribe
and the tribe changes you

Fierce people

If after reading all the above you feel happy and complete and a bit sad at the same time, you have proven that nature doesn't force us to choose between happiness and meaning. In fact, I myself can experience something in the present that reminds me of the past and makes me laugh because of it, or gives more meaning to the experience because of it.
Happiness is not always necessarily the feeling you could jump with joy. It can be a more subtle feeling of cherishing what once was there, or rejoycing that something is not there anymore.

However, the concept of time is something that was forgotten here. The concept of time makes what I suggest almost impossible. Almost no one can handle the knowledge of the speed of time, the time waisted, the time that can never be regained...

Artur Japin, Een schitterend gebrek

You kill it before it kills you

"But she didn't believe in destiny. She refused to believe. Even if the game was rigged and the house always won, you could still go on playing, even as you lost"

"He had loved her. But it hadn't helped. He had loved her, but he hated himself more. Such suffering, so much pain. And he thought it made him hateful, as if suffering were shameful, disgusting. As if pain were a crime. Why didn't he tell her? She could have helped him if only he'd let her. She could have done something. But it wasn't that what he wanted. How hard he'd pushed her away. And then said, don't leave me, please God. You're all I have. He'd loved her, he had. And he knew she loved him, he knew it! But it wasn't enough. She couldn't have imagined such a thing was possible. Love wasn't enough. Love, it seemed, wasn't as big as she'd thought. There were bigger things. She felt her heart being crushed, it was going to pop like a grape. But she closed the door and sat back down at the table. The black book hadn't finished unfolding its black tale"

"Why does each man kill the thing he loves? she'd asked him. They lay on their picknick tables, shaded with eucalyptuses, guarded by giant agaves twelve feet across, fleshy and blue-gray and edged with thorns. Prehistoric. Her soft dress floating around her thighs as he drew her. I don't get it, why would you kill the thing you loved? The softness of his voice. Even now, under the deodars in the Court of Freedom, her feet in the grass over his silent body, she could hear his voice, clear but soft, you had to stop whatever you were doing, and lean close to hear it. And he had replied so quietly it took a few seconds for it to register.
"You kill it before it kills you"

If you'll stay in my past

I understand,
You need to switch the roles around.
And despise me for the fact that we didn't last.
And I will be your punching bag,
If you'll stay in my past.
I understand,
To want to have a mature dialogue
Is too much to ask.
And I will be your one regret,
If you'll stay in my past.

I understand
You delude yourself and sleep with a different girl
Each night in order to recover fast
And I will let you cheapen sex
If you’ll stay in my past
I understand
That we can never speak again
And your resentment towards me will last
I will let you forget me
If you’ll stay in my past

I understand
That you will one day love again
And that it’s selfish of me to want to ask
If you can only live of the memory of me
So please stay in my past

Maria Mena

...Wish I could ever be that strong! Eh..actually, no, that's not me. Whoever has been that important in my life I just can not lose........

November in December

You can not find peace by avoiding life

I remember one morning getting up at dawn, there was such a sense of possibility.
You know, that feeling?
And I remember thinking to myself: So, this is the beginning of happiness.
This is where it starts.
And of course there will always be more.
It never occurred to me it wasn't the beginning.
It was happiness.
It was the moment.
Right then.

(The hours, 2002)

I remember the room. I remember everyone smiling and looking at her.
I remember her smiling. He was smiling too, thinking they would be happy together for the rest of their lives. And she?
What did she think in that exact instant? I have no idea. I know what she was doing: She was grabbing on to the idea of happiness with a firm idealistic belief in the future.

And then, in France:"Will I never sleep with anyone else for the rest of my life?"

Can it be that you have everything (the things that everyone considers everything) and then, in the course of fifteen months you slowly come to the decision to throw it all away.

No.

The decision comes to you. It just grabs you. You didn't know in advance. Not that afternoon on the boat, when you could have cried of boredom and loneliness, but one random night. Your unhappiness has gained so much strength and it has collected inside you with such unbreakable conviction that when he walks by (sent by whom? By God or the Devil? Will you ever be able to conclude it was God?) you stop him and, suddenly, the decision has taken human form.

And then,

like a flood people are carried away.
People and things. Whole houses are being carried away on those violent waves of obstinate certainty and you just stand there, watching. No tears.

A few years later you hide in a rented apartment in the midst of Amsterdam life and you spend a little bit too much of your time watching movies while you can't conjure up the you that did what she did. You can't remember her thoughts and her real feelings. No matter what you do you just see an image of someone doing things.

This girl racing through the small town on her bicycle, eyes on her watch. She's making phone calls and making up stories. She's cooking dinner and cooking up lies.

But what did she feel exactly?
Whatever she felt, I know now she didn't know (how could she possibly have known) the tears come later.

Christmas wish list

Santa Baby,
Just slip a sable under the tree
For me
Been an awful good girl
Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa baby, a '54 convertible too
Light blue
I'll wait up for you, dear Santa baby,
so hurry down the chimney tonight

Think of all the fun I've missed
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed
Next year I could be just as good
If you'll check off my Christmas list
Santa Baby, I want a yacht and really that's not
A lot
Been an angel all year Santa Baby,
so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa honey, one little thing I really need
The deed
To a platinum mine Santa Baby,
so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with a duplex
And cheques
Sign your 'x' on the line Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations bought at Tif-fa-ny
I really do believe in you
Lets see if you believe in me

Santa Baby, forgot to mention one little thing
A ring I don't mean on the phone Santa Baby,
so hurry down the chimney tonight

Hurry down the chimney tonight Hurry...tonight

This year's Christmas wish list is actually a joke. I have none. The last two years have been severe cases of Christmas wish lost and now that I found myself again - almost - that won't happen because

I know exactly what I have, I am aware of everything I lost, everything I won and everything I own. This means I'm not asking for anything. You know, it's as the Chinese say: beware of what you wish for, so I will just keep on cherishing my regained internal peace for now.

So thanks but no thanks, Santa baby, no need to bring me anything this year. I'm all covered for a no surprises holiday season:

Santa won't take away my jingle bells and leave me with a silent night....

My stocking's full of certainties
The lowest branches of my tree are dripping with the last remains of the hope I cherished during my childhood and adolescent years but (considering the temperature the global heating has donated this city lately) no chance it will freeze anytime soon which means that by the 24th of December it'll all be melted away!

Hundreds of people pass my window every week
My cat and I just watch them with a brave smile and since we know that no one will ring the bell to bring us roses, we stay in and start preparing the menu for the dinner I'll prepare for my family.

Maye one small wish, just for the sake of the view?

Okay then:

Let it snow,
Let it snow,
Let it snow!

Dissecting love

Leontyne Bennet skillfully dissected in The Commonwealth of Lost Vanities (1969) Virgil's renowned quotation: "Love conquers all."
"For centuries upon centuries," he writes on p. 559, "we have been misinterpreting this famed trio of words. The uninformed masses breathlessly hold up this dwarfish phrase as a justification for snogging in public squares, abandoning wives, cuckolding husbands, for the escalating divorce rate, for swarma of bastard children begging for handouts in the Whitechapel and Aldgate tube stations - when in fact, there is nothing remotely encouraging or cheerful about this oft-quoted phrase. The latin poet wrote "Amor vincit omnia," or "Love conquers all."
He did not write, "Love frees all" or "liberates" all, and therein lies the first degree of our flagrant misunderstanding. Conquer: To defeat, subjugate, massacre, cream, make mincement out of. Surely, this cannot be a positive thing. And then, he wrote "conquers all" - not exclusively the unpleasant things, destitution, assassination, burglary, but all, including pleasure, peace, common sense, liberty and self-determination. And thus we may appreciate that Virgil's words are not encouragement, but rather a caveat, a cue to evade, shirk, elude the feeling at all costs, else we risk the massacre of thinmgs we hold most dear, including our sense of self."

(Marisha Pessl, Special Topics in Calamity Physics)

Now why do I report this quote? Is it because I believe it's true? Well, yes, in a certain sense, it is true, love can destroy so much, love can hurt us so much and yes, we should be warned against it. Also, for all those centuries people have been aware of this very fact. And yet, they keep on loving and they keep on suffering. Why would they do that if they knew chances are that it will ache?

Because...

Because it's the reason for being. Love, and then I mean not only love for a woman or a man but also love for one's family, intense love for other people, whether they be friends or family or the person you will spend 'the rest of your life' with. Without this, and all the suffering that comes with it, life is nothing. Suffering without love is impossible, but neither is love without suffering, so the choice is ours. We can choose to be numb or we can choose to live and laugh, and cry.

The real me

We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.

T.S. Elliot

Morning at the Window

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates.
The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

T.S Elliot

I carry your heart with me,
I carry your heart with me,
I carry it in my heart,
I am never without it,
anywhere I go you go, my dear;
and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling,
I fear No fate, for you are my fate, my sweet,
I want No world, for beautiful you are my world, my true.
Here is the deepest secret nobody knows,
here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud,
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;
which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide.
And this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
I carry your heart,
I carry it in my heart.

We sit late

We sit late, watching the dark slowly unfold:
No clock counts this.

(Ted Hughes)

Recently, I took up living again.

It's not bad.

Living and actually feeling alive makes me want to dance and so, I started dancing again too.

I saw this movie once. In the movie an old woman said:"You know, I was a diver!"
When I will be old, I will want to say:"You know, I always was and always will be a dancer!"

Starting to dance again is a real breakthrough for me.

And at the place where I was dancing the tango, I was having a beer with two older men.
One man said he was happily divorced and then they both looked at me:
"What about you?"
I said:"yes, I'm happily divorced too!" and added a smile for the sake of playfulness.

I gather it helps to make statements like that because, even if they are not completely accurate, they make you want to make them accurate.

I put on my shoes and walk in the room as I always do, on my own but confident to make a good entrance. I watch people and sometimes they watch me too.

And between the lines, I see I'm writing again.

Sometimes all it takes is to be conscious of the fact that one doesn't need to forget in order to start over. The easiest thing to do but most difficult thing to digest is to be consumed with anger because you were not loved while you thought you were and thus you were tricked into loving.

But let's assume you loved someone that thought he loved you back but didn't know how to love. You can only hope that one day they will learn to love and in the mean time feel sorry for them that they didn't live that time together as intensely as you did.

So take a minute to remember all the adventures that have made your life so much richer because you took those risks!! And never hesitate to be adventurous again if this is your nature!

And so little people know the real secret! Not many people know that what they give up because they are afraid of boredom can actually lead to the best adventure in life. Fear will always stop people from doing the most beautiful things in life and later, they will always be sorry.....like for not embracing the fact that you have found your soul mate and you should move on together. Resist it and you've missed it, let's say! Yes, they will discover this in their search for what they could have had already long time ago and they will always keep complaining.

Alas

Well, this whole sentimental and corny tale would imply I am some kind of Barbara Cartland but I just want to say that you shouldn't regret anything because it takes too much energy that you could actually use for positive things.

Also, by not regretting too much you gain more trust in the future, I'm starting to see that now even if I didn't as yet find what I have always wished for.

Truce

What occupies the space in your head?
Think about it for a moment.
How would you measure the contents of your mind?
What about feelings and thoughts fighting each other in there, and, who knows, maybe the left and the right side of your brain?
Could it be true that the two sides of your brain, tormented by constant contrasting thoughts and feelings, while combatting each other fiercely, eventually come to a truce?

There could be different types of truces, you know, and if you think about it, it will soon be clear to you which truce applies to you, because if you're still alive and not on the verge of suicide or about to kill another human being, there's bound to be a truce. There could be that sane truce that leads you to live a calm and balanced life. There could be the truce of chaos that will not allow you to think but only to do, to move, and never stop (some people are so addicted to this state that they resort to cocaine).

But not you, right? Your mind, so occupied in useless thoughts that are apparently very valid to you, has reached such a truce that it forces your body to stop moving. Your mind commands your eyes to stare at the clock without seeing what time it is. It commands you to stare as if there were only a void. It commands you to lay down and wish you could sleep forever. It commands you to have to think for an hour whether you should get up and take a shower or not. In the end you do, reluctantly. After a while you dress and go outside.

You walk, tentatively, and look around. It's cold and windy. People stare and you stare right through them. You know they probably think you're normal. But you know you're not. You sit down in a bar and read a book, drink some wine. You think, you could do this at home, of course, but you sometimes force yourself to act as if you were mingling. You put down the book and look around. Everyone is chatting, discussing, laughing, whispering and you are just observing,

always observing.

You know that you indeed accept this state of mind as a truce, but it's the wrong word for it.

It's war.

This is for me....

How many letters have I written to you with tears in my eyes? Tears of happiness and tears of sadness. Tears of joy and of anger.

How many of my thoughts have been dedicated to you?
How many jokes that I hear and stories and movies and conversations and how many sights I see do I still want to share with you?

I'd write to you every day, if I could.

Well....even if my hands were bleading, even if my eyesight were gone, I couldn't live without writing. It keeps me feeling alive. When I write to others I write to myself as well.

You and me, we started out writing, before anything else. Or maybe, it is just me that started loving you on the screen - no paper, modern times - and afterwards never stopped. Can you imagine that? Do you remember that?

And

Will you ever hear someone say the same thing again, about you and her?
"We started out writing to each other!"

Yeah...

If I weren't so selfish, I'd say, I hope so, for you, but I am selfish. I'd like this to be a memory you only share with me.

Sometimes you know someone for ten years and if they ask you about memories, you name a few, but you don't feel anything. With some people though, the memories make you laugh and smile and cry and scream and shiver and smell so many smells.

This is a love letter if there ever was one.

For you.

When your show is over, my show begins

Guardati intorno
Il mondo si alza
cade
e si rialza

Il tuo cervello
bruciato
vorrebbe
anche solo per un attimo
il niente
ma e' tanto

E cosi' non si riposa
So com'e'
terrificante

"Tristan, I have no where to send this letter and no reason to believe you wish to receive it. I write it only for myself. And so I will hide it away with all things left unsaid and undone between us."

"Forever turned out to be too long."

"Some people hear their own inner voices with great clearness and they live by what they hear. Such people become crazy, or they become legends. "

"She was like the water that freezes inside a rock and breaks it apart. It was no more her fault than it is the fault of the water when the rock shatters. "

(quotes from Legends of the Fall)

"It feels ridiculous to make a salad for only yourself. You wash the lettuce, tear it apart, cut up the tomatoes, add a little dressing, and wonder whether it will feel less ridiculous, hollow, artificial, with the passage of time. Don't add dressing. No one is watching. Try to cover the hum of the fluorescent strip light and the refrigerator with the radio. The radio is worse. It shouts at you, advertisements, drum and bass, little girl or boy groups voicing perfectly timed musical cliches to computerized accompaniments, right-wing shock jocks with switchboards lit up by fear, hate and ignorance, or New Age flatulence masquerading as enlightenment. Turn it off and that just leaves you the hum and the salad. If you don't add dressing, it will be over that much faster. Then you try leaving out the tomatoes. (...) The idea is that there is a definite warning sign for people living by themselves - the salad dressing stops appearing in the salad, then the tomatoes, then the salad itself. Then you're just left with a bowl which, sooner or later, you fill with cereal and milk and then - for the hell of it - you start to add a little scotch to the milk.

No one calls and after a while you feel pleased with how long it has been since the last time you thought about how long it had been since somebody called. You can't remember when you last remembered. You must really be getting good at living like this. And it's just as well because when the phone rings by this time, even when it's a wrong number, a hang-up, or a telemarketer, you don't want to speak to anyone. You're in no fit state to speak to anyone. It's not even a matter of sobriety. Even sober, you're in no fit state to speak to anyone. You're out of practice."

Seven types of ambiguity, Elliot Perlman
